Who needs to have a food handler's certificate?

It is an Australia and New Zealand Food Standards (FSANZ) requirement that everyone involved in the handling or processing of food have the knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely and proper awareness and compliance of food safety and hygiene practices. In most jurisdictions in Australia there is no mandated training for food handlers but having all staff complete a food handler's certificate training course is a good way for employers to be able to prove that they meet the Food Standards requirements.

Food handlers certificate training is normally conducted as unit of competency from one of the nationally recognised training packages. The Australian Online College delivers the unit of competency 'SITXOHS002A - Follow workplace hygiene practices' which is the entry level food safety course within the hospitality, tourism, and transport training packages. This course covers topics including handling food hygienically, keeping the workplace clean, pest control, correct storage temperatures, preventing food spoilage and maintaining good personal hygiene. This food handlers course is also a prerequisite for the qualification required by Food Safety Supervisors in the hospitality, tourism and transport industries.

Look at our food handler's certificate course information page for further information on the training offered by the Australian Online College. This course meets the Food Handlers requirements of FSANZ Standard 3.2.2 Food Safety Practices and General Requirements.

People whose role includes the duties of a food safety supervisor do need to be trained and legislation defines minimum qualification levels. The Australian Online College delivers food safety supervisor courses which meet the training requirements for the hospitality, tourism and transport industries. Details of the requirements for the retail and health and community services area can be found on our food safety supervisor training requirements page. Food safety supervisor course information can be found by following the link.

The requirements for food handler certificates and food safety training extend to not-for-profit and volunteer organisations which serve food or prepare food for public consumption. If there is any doubt about whether you need to complete a food handler certificate then you should contact the health department of your local council.
