Course Description

The course is our introductory (accredited) safe food handling certificate course. It is designed to provide new or aspiring food handlers with the basic safe food handling and food hygiene skills and will assist employers in meeting the Australia and New Zealand Food Standards Code requirement that all personnel involved in food handling must have the skills and knowledge they need to handle food safely.

This is a modular course which includes sections relating to:

  • Following hygiene procedures and identifying food hazards; and
  • Report personal health issues; and
  • Preventing food contamintation; and
  • Preventing cross contamination by washing hands.

This online safe food handling certificate course introduces HACCP procedures and includes progressive multiple choice assessment at the end of each section. Students are able to view the course materials as often as required and must achieve 100% in each assessment section to pass the course. (Multiple attempts at the assessments are permitted).

This is a high quality, engaging, interactive and narrated course.


This course is accreditated and is delivered as Nationally Recognized Training under the Australian Quality Training Framework and is delivered by the Australian Online College Pty Ltd RTO #32289.

Completion of this course leads to the issue of a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency 'SITXFSA101 - Use hygienic practices for food safety'. This unit of competency replaces and is equivalent to SITXOHS002A - Follow workplace hygiene procedures.

This course is accepted in the retail, hospitality and transport industries.

Students who do not need to obtain a Statement of Attainment for Nationally Recognised Training may wish to save some money and enrol in our non-accredited Introduction to Safe Food Practices course  which contains the same learning material content but does not have the same assessment requirements or require the student to have access to a food workplace to complete the assesment.


This course does not have any pre-requisites.

Entry Requirements

Students must supply a current, valid email address in order to enrol in the course and must have access to a computer with:

  • Broadband internet access
  • Web Browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox Preferred)
  • Email account access
  • Flash 8 or higher player
  • Sound card and speakers required for listening to narration.

The assessment for this course requires access to a commercial food preparation area, bar or kitchen.

Career Opportunities

This course is a prerequistite for employees involved in the food preparation, food handling or food service. Employees could be engaged in the food processing, retail, hospitality, health and community services or transport and distribultion industries. Typical workplaces for food handlers include bakers, catering companies, breweries, ice or wine production facilities, supermarkets, convenience stores, grocers, delicatessens, restaurants, hotels, take-away food outlets and cafes, market stalls, warehouses and bulk food distribution centres.

Time to Complete

You should allow 4 hours of uninterrupted time to complete this course.

Requirement for Recurrent Training

There is no recurrent training requirement for this course.
