Course Description

The course is designed to meet the education requirements for employees whose duties include those of a food safety supervisor within the retail, hospitality and transport and distribution industries. Food workers in the food processing or health and community services industries please consult our food safety supervisor training requirements page.

This course is modular and contains sections about:

  • Applying personal hygiene and sanitation practices;
  • Identifying and implementing food safety programs;
  • Storing and handling food products hygienically;
  • Cleaning work areas and equipment;
  • Monitoring food safety;
  • Contributing to continuous improvement.

This course includes six, end of lesson multiple choice assessments plus an assessment of their workplace skills which can be completed by either:

  • demonstrating nominated skills to their workplace supervisor; or
  • completing a series of 12 short answer questions relating to your workplace operations; or
  • completing an interview with an Australian Online College assessor.

This course is interactive and narrated.

Mode of Delivery

This course is delivered as blended learning with the interactive learning materials and majority of the assessment conducted online. The final assessment task can be condusted in a real or simulated work place.

This course has been developed to meet the requirements of the national unit of competency SIRRFSA001A - Apply Retail Food Safety Practices and is delivered as National Recognised Training under the Australian Quality Training Framework by the Australian Online College Pty Ltd RTO #32289.

This course meets the education requirements food safety supervisors in the retail, hospitality and transport and distribution industries.


This unit of competency has no pre-requisite requirements.

Entry Requirements

Students must supply a current, valid email address in order to enrol in the course and must have access to a computer with:

  • Broadband internet access
  • Web Browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox Preferred)
  • Email account access
  • Flash 8 or higher player
  • Sound card and speakers required for listening to narration

Students must also have access to a real or simulated workplace in order to complete the final assessment task.

Career Opportunities

This course is a prerequistite for employees whose role includes that of a Food Safety Supervisor. Examples of work environments that are required to have a food safety supervisor include supermarkets, convenience stores, grocers, delicatessens, restaurants, hotels, take-away & cafes, private function caterers, market stalls, warehouses and food distribution centres.

Time to Complete

You should allow 8 hours hours of uninterrupted time to complete the online component of this course. You will need to arrange a time with your workplace supervisor to complete the skills appraisal.

Requirement for Recurrent Training

SIRRFSA001A - Apply retail food safety practices does not require recurrent training.
